A Weekend Getaway to Fort Myers and Sanibel Island

If you are looking for a picturesque and affordable weekend getaway, look no further than Sanibel Island and Fort Myers, FL.

We spent a gorgeous Friday biking along the multiple bike trails that line the island, making a perfect way for adventurers to explore along the 12-mile island and also get a great workout.

Begin your day of biking by riding over to the J.N. Darling National Wildlife Refuge to explore. Catch a glimpse of one of the refuge's many wildlife and inhabitants, including alligators, within the dense marshlands.

Head down the coast to Bowman's Beach, where you can scour the shoreline collecting beautiful conchs, olives and scallop shells on one of the island's best shelling beaches. We spent hours walking the beaches, finding endless amounts of shells and managed to snag the white elephant of all shells-a perfectly intact conch.

While you are biking back down the coast, keep your eyes peeled for old tombstones amongst the palm trees. The Sanibel Island Historic Cemetery, next to the Gulfside Park Reserve, is a well-preserved landmark, that is so calm, yet haunting.

If you enjoy sunsets, then be sure to grab your beach towel and find a nice spot along the shoreline to enjoy a serene view at sundown. The horizon is painted with blues, reds, oranges, yellows, and pinks- the colors quickly changing the closer the sun comes to setting on the horizon. It was hypnotic and I couldn't get enough of its beauty.

If you are looking for adventure on the mainland, head into Fort Myers to Manatee Park and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these gentle mammals.  Afterward, check out Fort Myer's craft beer scene and stop in to Bury Me Brewing to grab a flight and enjoy the eclectic brewery vibe.

From the tranquil vibes to the beautiful beaches and endless places to explore, we can't wait to go back!
